Opportunity Knocks
Monday, March 8, 2004
Well Hello...it seems like it's been forever since we've spoken. As I predicted, working 10 hours for each of the past 3 days didn't lend much time to the old logbook. I don't have a whole lot to tell you about, but there is one pretty interesting story that you might enjoy. Ready?
Ok, it's about 5:30am Saturday morning. All's quiet, and I'm sound asleep with the hatch in the v-berth (directly above my head) open. Ms. Eva is still playing on the radio from the night before. All of the sudden, all hell breaks loose. The wind starts to blow 25-30 and rain is coming down in sheets. I'm quickly awoken due to the nice soaking I'm getting from the open hatch. I close the hatch & try and figure out what in the heck is going on. Once I finally get half-awake, I hear this loud pouring sound. (Real quick- a loud pouring sound isn't something you like to hear when you live on a boat.) I realize that it's coming from the window that I had apparently 'fixed'. I finally get out of the berth and see that there are 3 solid streams of water pouring from this window. Figures. Ok, I'm still asleep, but instinct kicks in so I just go through the motions of getting it stopped. I get my slickers on and go above to put a towel over the window hoping to slow the flow. That worked, and luckily the towel didn't blow away, so the leak was halted. The next logical thing to do (or at least it seemed when I was half-asleep) was to seal the cracks. So I dry off the top of the window and grab a tube of sealant and start working. I'm going to try to give you a good visual of what happened next...The wind's blowing pretty hard, so my boat is rocking back and forth...I'm huddled up against the wall under the window trying to brace myself as I squeeze this tube of sealant in the cracks above the window. I've got on a headlamp, but to see the cracks well enough to get the sealant in there good, I've got to position my head as close as possible. Still half-asleep. Tough tube, squeezing really hard...Splat- the back of the tube bursts open! A tube of silicone sealant squirted all over the right side of my face. It'd be like if somebody opened up a tube of toothpaste on your face, but there was about twice as much, and it's designed to seal, therefore it's unbelievably sticky. Perfect. It might not have been as bad were I clean-shaven, but it literally took me close to an hour to get the majority of it out of my beard enough to go back to sleep. When I woke back up, I had it all over my pillow, and when I got to the porch for coffee, Ms. Patti spent another 5 minutes picking at it to try and get the rest of it out. Quite an eventful morning to say the least.
Ok, what else...Today I finally tackled the inside of the boat and cleaned everything. All my clothes and supplies are now somewhat organized rather than scattered all everywhere. The weather's be amazing great but today it was a bit chilly. They say it's going to be nothing but better for the rest of the week. I love this place. Hmm...Oh, this afternoon I went out with the Dolphin Express boat that operates out here...this is the guy that I've been talking about getting job with. He still hasn't officially offered me anything, but he keeps talking about it. Anyway, I went out with them and we saw a good many dolphins...they jumped really good and all. It was pretty fun, and deckhanding for that thing would be a breeze. However, when I got off that boat I was walking back down the dock and Clyde stopped me. Clyde is Capt. Barry's brother and lives on Daedalus. He also works for the boat rental outfit that operates out of the dock store. Anyway, I was walking by and he handed me his phone. The guy on the other end was the owner of the rental company and offered me a job. Wow...wasn't expecting that! I really think that it'd be an easy gig that would have some perks. Plus, he said that he's pretty sure he'd be able to pay me better than the dolphin cruise. He's supposed to come by tomorrow and talk with me about it. I certainly can't complain about these opportunities coming my way...I just hope one of them works out. I'm hoping to arrange it so that I work weekends full-time at the resturant and one of the other jobs a few days during the week. Who know's what'll end up happening, but I'm liking my chances.
Heidi and her mom & boyfriend came into town today. I got to be pretty good friends with Heidi because she works at the West Marine up at Lake Lanier, and I've been in there a few times a week for the past 8 months. She's on spring break this week...I told her that I'd take them sailing if they wanted to go, but who knows. I plan on going sometime tomorrow regardless. I've just got to get my lazy jacks rigged before I go out...that'll solve one of the problems I had raising the sail the other day, and it'll make lowering the sail 10 times easier. Anyway, I'm beat...I'll talk to ya'll later.
