Good ole Panama City
Thursday, June 10, 2004
Today was quite a nice day. I got up and out of Destin Harbor at around 0615 without incident. I pulled out of East Pass & think that I saw a pretty big shark on the way out. It never surfaced, but it was a huge moving shadow. Also, it wasn't 150 yards from where I was snorkeling yesterday. Great. Once I got to the farewell bouy, I headed East, in the direction of Panama City. About 42 miles from seabuoy to seabuoy. I set the autopilot & picked my book back up, scanning my surroundings only every few minutes.
I really like this whole offshore thing...it's so much easier to navigate than the intercoastal waterway, & you don't have to worry near as much about other boat traffic. The flying fish were out again, and it was really cool to watch them. Also, I could barely see them to the south of me, but there were about 5 Naval warships doing some exercises or something.
Around 1500 I made my approach into Panama City. The cut there is maintained much better than that of Destin, and the depths were well above 15 feet, & sometimes more than 30.
I pulled into Panama City Marina and decided to stay the night at the dock there. It was nice to get an actual freshwater shower...something I haven't had since I left on Monday.
Ok, so girl & her friends from yesterday came & picked me up & we all went out to dinner. Me & 9 girls...not too shabby, huh? And I just realized that I don't even have a picture to prove it. Good one, Bo. After dinner at Montego Bay, we walked around and found some ice cream. We then went to Club Latitudes for some reason, & at 10:00, we were the only folks there. I was assured that everybody would show up at midnight, but we didn't stick it out. Kate & Natalie brought me back to the boat around 11:45, and we hung out for another hour or two. If the weather's good, I may take them sailing tomorrow...who knows.
My next stop along the coast is Port St. Joe. It'll be another trip out in the gulf, but it's only about half as far as I've been going, so it shouldn't be a bad trip at all.
