Panama City, Revisited
Friday, June 11, 2004

I woke up Friday morning & decided I wanted to spend another day in Panama City. The nice folks at Panama City Marina said it was no problem, so I was set. One of the best things about the City Marina, is that it's walking distance from downtown P.C...not the strip, but the historical part that most of you haven't been to. (The worst part about the marina, on the other hand, would be the square concrete pilings that you have to tie up to...square...concrete...must have been a Tech grad that came up with that.)

It didn't take long to find the library, so I tried to update everybody on my trip so far, & catch up on some other events. I hadn't posted my entries for longer than 20 minutes before I had 3 people call me up to talk about them. Amazing.

I was in the market for a haircut, but didn't really see what I was looking for...although now that I think about it, I'm not really sure what I'm expecting...I saw a place that said something about 'Hair Designs' and also a barber-type shop, but both looked kinda sketchy, so I kept going. I wonder how successful I'd be at cutting my own hair? Eh...I don't think I have a mirror larger than a walet on board, so I may ought to wait a bit.

After all the hair stuff was over, I was getting rather hungry, so I stopped in to “Lucille's Home Cooking.” According to the window, she even claimed that it was better than mom made. Hmm...for those of you who don't know me, I'm a huge fan of the soul food, & it's been quite a while since I've had a good helping. (I could seriously go for some Wilson's or Shirley's about now...) So, needless to say, I was salivating at the thought of some good home cooking, & when I saw that they were starting to put out a buffet, I was even more thrilled. Well, it was still kinda early when I walked in (10:15ish), so I sat down & began reading my book waiting on the buffet to be ready. In hindsight, I should have been suspicious when a young Chinese dude came and took my drink order. Now, please, don't think that I have anything at all against the Chinese...I'm quite a fan, actually, & my two favorite Chan's are Jackie & Johnnie. But, in Georgia, I know of very few 'Home Cooking' establishments who have catered to, much less employed our Eastern friends. Sure enough, when I got up to the “better than mom makes” buffet looking for my fried chicken, green beans & creamed corn, all I found was egg drop soup, fried rice & sesame chicken. Unbelieveable. Apparently Lucille's last name isn't Wilson or Geter. A great meal, don't get me wrong, but for some reason, I felt I'd been cheated. Oh well...maybe next time.

I spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around town & then tried to go back in the library. Let me explain...I've never had many run-ins with library personel back home, but down here, these people are just another breed. To use the internet, you have to get a number & write your name down...As soon as you get to your respective computer, a 60 minute timer starts & you're on the clock. At the end of that 60 minutes, the computer doesn't care what you're doing, where you are, or if you've typed 90% of a 3 page logbook entry, it restarts & tells you to leave. I was amazed...I'm one of like 4 people trying to use one of the 30 computers, & I just got kicked off? Is this a joke? Well, apparently these people haven't spent much time in the Humor section, because it was no joke. The beatenest, though, was that you're only allowed 1 computer session per day! Eh...between you & me, if you leave, go to a Chinese buffet & come back under a different name & wearing a hat, there's a good chance you can squeeze in a second session before they catch on to you.

Ok...enough of my soapbox for today. Later.
