Fort Myers Beach
Thursday, June 24, 2004

I left Pelican Bay around lunchtime and made my way down to the Sanibel Island/Fort Myers area. I wasn't sure where I was going to really end up that night, but I decided that I kinda needed to stock up on a few things before jumping off to Key West, so I ended up at Fort Myer's Beach Marina. The good thing is, though, that I got there after they had closed, so there wasn't anyone to pay. I knew I would be leaving early, so I didn't try and fit into a slip, I just tied up to the fuel dock on the end. Once I got docked, I tried to hail Witchy Woman just for grins, and sure enough they were anchored off of Fort Myer's Beach. When I say the Beach, I mean beach...like, ocean...like surf rolling. Apparently they had come in late the night before and didn't want to mess with trying to get into the harbor, so they just dropped the hook out in the gulf. They said that it did end up being quite a rough ride, but hey...whatever works!

I ended up walking forever to try and get to the place they were hanging out, but I made it and we stayed out until 2:30 or so. The next morning, I woke up around 7:30 and stopped in at the dockmaster's office to try and pay for my dockage. I told the guy I'd stayed at the fuel dock and was about to leave, so he told me not to worry about paying for the night. Sweet...that saved me about $30 or so! That'll help offset some of the cost of gas...these marinas are pretty proud of it at $2.50 a gallon.
