The Perfect Crossing

Like I said...I left Ft. Myer's Beach Marina around 7:30 and left the harbor for the 120 mile trek to Key West. I passed Witchy Woman on the way out, and we sailed beside each other for a while. The wind actually picked up and cooperated with me for a long time, and I sailed for hours. It was sooo nice. The sunset was spectacular. That, then gave way to the darkest night you've ever seen. I think the moonrise was a few hours after sunset, and I seriously couldn't see my hand in front of my face. I did, however, catch a fish around midnight, which added a good bit of excitement to the trip!

I've gotten a lot more confident on these crossings, and have gotten to where I can really get a pretty good night's sleep. The autopilot keeps me going in the right direction, so I'm free to nap for 20-30 minutes at a time, then look around, & nap some more! It's not been bad at all.

I arrived at the Key West seabouy around 8:30 Saturday morning, but the channel was so long, I wasn't anchored until around 10:30. I can't tell you how good it felt to get there...this is something I've been talking about forever, and I've finally done it...finally sailed to Key West! I cleaned the boat up for a little while, then spent the rest of the afternoon napping. Witchy Woman got in around 5:30 and anchored near me off of Fleming Key. I used my solar shower thing to clean up a little, then we went in and hit the big town. The city marina has a dinghy dock for people like us, so it was quite convenient to have a place to dock when we were there. The dinghy ends up being your car of sorts, and you've got to have a good, cheap place for your car, right?

I talked to the fam, and they are spending the night in Orlando...they're on their way to meet me down here for a mini-vacation. I think they'll drive the rest of the way tomorrow. It'll be good to see them...It's been nearly a month!
