Drying Out
Thursday, February 26, 2004

Today was an extremely uneventful day. I guess that's a good thing. I woke up and did the morning coffee gossip thing, but it was pretty quiet today...I'm not real sure where Ms. Patty was. After a while, I rode over to Foley to get some new shoes. I finally had to break down and buy some new tennis shoes because I didn't really have any that I could wear to work. Can I just say that I absolutely hate outlet malls? I got back and realized that the whole bag of socks I got contained nothing but dirty socks. Wha? Had they been already used or something? I don't get it...why even sell something like that? Shouldn't there be a disclaimer or something? There's no telling what's wrong with my shoes...I'm sure I'll wake up tomorrow and realize that my foot is green or something. Stupid place.

I also finally got my computer to work on the local library's wireless network, so I can finally kinda connect to the internet, even if it's by sitting in their parking lot like a stalker or something. I'll try and get all of these things finally uploaded tomorrow so ya'll can actually see what I've been doing.

I got back to the boat around 3:00ish and decided to start trying to tackle some of the window leaks. They claim that the weather is supposed to be really good until next week, so I figure now's my chance. I only ended up having time to work on one of them before it got too dark. It didn't take long to figure out how the things are put together, but it took nearly an hour to actually get it out. The old (ineffective, obviously) sealant was still sticking well in spots, so i had to be careful not to break the glass. Once I finally got the window out, I was able to clean up most of the edges with my Dremel tool, so I should be able to get it back in the hole and seal it up tomorrow morning. If I'm lucky I'll be able to knock out at least another two or three windows before I go to work. Oh, and I was able to dry all my towels, so I might actually have something DRY to dry off with in the morning! That'll be a nice change.

Once it got dark I fired up the old alcohol stove and boiled some water for oatmeal. That stuff is severely underrated, I just have to tell you. Alcohol stoves, on the other hand, freak me out. I don't know if I've explained this thing before, but basically it's a little stove that has 2 burners in the galley corner of my boat. To light this thing, you fill the reservoir with stove alcohol, then you pressurize it. Then, you pour more fuel into the burner itself and light it. Now, I'm not very good at painting pictures with words, but if you don't already have a visual, how about FLAME. Above the burner, there's about 2.5 feet of space before you get to the roof, and I kid you not that the flames from this thing go up between 1 and 2 feet. You basically wait until the flame dies down (can you say FOREVER?) and then crank up the fuel to the burner. Once you get the burner going, it really is a great stove and works beautifully, but getting to that point is always quite an adventure.

Anyway, I was supposed to play cards with Sailboat Terry, but I think that he's asleep or something, so I think I'm going to take off and read some more Grisham...I didn't get to read very much last night what with the wind tossing the boat around and all.
