The Big Leap

Well...I hate to tell ya, but life here has pretty much settled into a pretty nice, uneventful pace. The weather has been great for the past few days, but somehow I've managed to get very little done on the leak front. Wait, I now remember why that is...WORK. Ain't it great? I've been working at the resturant all weekend long, so I've had very few interesting stories to relay to ya'll. I hate to disappoint, but I think we'd all rather see interesting stories or no stories at all...that way, when you see that I've posted something new, you know that it has a pretty good chance of being worth reading. The log will really crank up when I actually start cruising, but between now and then, entries will probably be pretty bare.

Anyway...lemme try and go through the past few days hitting the highlights...
Finished Grisham- Great Book. Woke up a little late on Friday, had to run some errands. Talked with the captain from the Dolphin Express that operates out of my marina about becoming a deckhand. Sounds like they're going to need somebody in the next week or two, so we agreed to set up an interview in the next few days. The season is about to get kicked up again...all the snowbirds are finally moving out and everybody is gearing up for spring breakers. That'd be a pretty good job...at least it would get me out on the water some.

Stopped by the library and uploaded all my log pages so ya'll finally had something to read. Spent a few hours at the library, then went in to work around 4. Got off work, played cards with a bunch of guys at the dock store until pretty late, then had to be up Saturday around 8 to wait on the cable guy. Woke up, cable guy never showed, then had to be at work around 11. Worked from 11 to 10, cussing the cable guy the whole time. Apparently, they didn't have me on the schedule. Hmm...tell that to the lady who told me they'ed be there sometime between 8 & 12. Figures. So, now they claim somebody'll be here first thing Monday morning. Great...I get to wake up really early again to wait for nobody to show. They weren't kidding when they said they were hiring people immediately (the other day). If I had somebody working for me that had a 4 hour window to show up for a meeting and still couldn't seem to make it, I'd probably be looking for somebody else too.

After work Saturday I didn't see anybody around, so I went to bed fairly early. I'm not really sure where Ms. Cathy & Mr. Hank were this weekend, but I haven't seen them. Mr. Mark & Ms. Patty invited me to dinner Monday night, so I'm pretty stoked about that...They really are as nice & fun as they can be

Today I got up and got up and walked over to see if they needed me to work lunch, and they did, so I worked until around 2. After work, Jesse (a guy I work with) said he was about to go to the beach and check out a surfing competition that was supposedly going on. Hmm...I never knew there was much surfing around Orange Beach...count me in! After hanging around for about 30 minutes or so, we determined that we were right...there isn't much surfing near Orange Beach. I think I might have seen 1 guy make it for more than 5 seconds. Despite the fact that there weren't hoards of females at this thing like we'd hoped, it was certainly something I could mark off the to-do list. Surfing Competition...Check! Jesse turns out to be a pretty interesting guy...at 15 he and a friend had started their own record label. By 17 their company was making over a hundred grand a year. They lived the rockstar lifestyle for a few years, and then somehow he ended up here last fall broke at 21. Who would have known.

Anyway, after the competition I came back and tried to get a few things done on the boat...I finally had a chance to rebed the chainplate for one of the lower shrouds, so I was then able to get the mast somewhat tuned and ready to go. I put the mainsail back on the boom yesterday, so before long I'll be ready to take her out for a test sail. I hope to at least get out on the water for an afternoon sometime this week. We'll see what happens with the weather. Speaking of...I don't think I've told you about what happened during last Monday's storm. One of the commercial fishing boats that goes in and out of Perdido Key (which is about 2 miles from me) was lost. Apparently they were out fishing with another few boats before the storm hit. The other boats made it ok, but the only thing they've found from the Sarah B is their emergency beacon. It looks pretty hopeless at this point...I think there were 2 people on board. Horrible.

Hate to leave you on a sad note, but I'm going to run to the laundry room and try and find another book to start reading. It seems the laundry room is the unofficial marina library, it's kinda the 'take a book, leave a book' thing, best I can tell.
