In the Southernmost of Keys
Tuesday, June 29, 2004
Yup...After talking about it for well over 25 years, I've finally done it- I've finally sailed to Key West. As Dad told you, I left last Friday morning, and arrived here around 10:30am on Saturday. I don't have my journal with me right now, so you're going to have to wait another little bit for the entire account, but it couldn't have been a better trip than it was. All said and done, it took me about 120 nautical miles, and 27ish hours. Amazing, really.
I met up with Mom, Dad & the girls Sunday afternoon & have been hanging out with them for a while. Witchy Woman and crew left with me Friday morning and pulled in to the anchorage Saturday afternoon, so we've been hanging out a good bit as well. Key West really is quite an interesting place, and I've really enjoyed the time spent here...I could easily spend a few weeks here.
However, I've got another trick up my sleeve. There is a small, little-known chain of islands that continues west of Key West. The Marquesas Keys and the Dry Tortugas being the main attraction. More about the Dry Tortugas later, but you can check them out here. I hope to leave early this Thursday and spend a few days out there. (Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas is about 70 mi west of Key West.) From what I hear, the snorkeling at the Tortugas is even a hundred times better than here in the keys. Who'da thunk it?
Anyway, I'll do a better job of filling you in, and throw up some pictures here in a day or so...as soon as I get a chance and a way. Hope ya'll are doing well!! Call me if you get the time...706.231.3217. Later!
p.s. more about the 'southernmost' next time
